Leaving It All Behind: My Journey to Freedom, Adaptation, and Building a Dream Life Abroad

Why I Left It All Behind: Seeking freedom, tranquility, and a lighter mindset, I traded increasing regulations and high taxes for a fresh start abroad. Facing challenges like language barriers, new climates, and adapting to local rhythms, I embraced humility and courage. With careful finances and a bit of luck, I built my dream life from the ground up.

The Reason

We all have our own reasons for leaving our home country. Some have never left, while others are already in “nomad” mode, hopping from country to country for various professional or personal reasons. The journey of expatriation requires deep reflection.

For me, I sought freedom, tranquility, space, and a lighter mindset. I wanted to escape the increasing regulations, restrictions, surveillance, and high level of taxes that seem to erode our quality of life and freedom, especially in Europe over the past several decades. Each person has their own reasons, even if those reasons are sometimes buried deep within us.

Overcome Barriers

The archipelago aligned with my aspirations. Additionally, I wanted to take on the challenge of building on my own without hiring a contractor. Although I had some skills, I faced many unknowns in a new country—the working ethics, the language barrier, and different units of measurement. Adapting was essential. I believe that’s the key: adapting to the rhythm of the local population, the administrative processes, the climate, and a myriad of other new factors. It required humility, respect, and courage.

Finances vs Dreams

Financial resources also play a crucial role in the success of settling in a new place. It’s important to tailor your project to your budget and maintain discipline. Yet, sometimes, resources alone aren’t enough. Luck also undeniably influences the realization of our dreams.

After 15 years as a real estate agent in Panama, I felt the need to renew myself.

I therefore decided to stop this activity to now offer consulting, especially on rights of possession, and how to organize a real estate purchase in order to avoid the pitfalls which can sometimes be expensive, if we do not take a certain number of precautions.

I also use my field experience to give you some useful tips on construction, choice of materials, choice of a boat, the solar system, rainwater collection, relationships with the local population, travel on the archipelago, the authorizations and other necessary permits, and many other aspects, in short, how to approach your new life.

Then, I had the chance to meet Didier, distributor for the Caribbean of wooden kit houses, from South Africa. He simply suggested that we work together to develop exclusive distribution in Panama, and more widely in Central America.
